In 2026, APEC will be hosted in Shenzhen. In this inclusive city framed by mountains and sea, Eric, a French resident of Shenzhen for 15 years, has crafted a hand-polished board game that distills APEC's spirit and Shenzhen's story onto a game board.

“I'm a French native and also a Shenzhener,” Eric introduces himself. He arrived in Shenzhen as an architect in 2011. Five years later, he switched to a board game coach. Over 15 years, he built his family and career here, settling in the Meilin-Lianhuabei area, a green valley encircled by Lianhua Hill, Bijia Hill and Meilin Hill.“So the green is everywhere. I travel everywhere in Shenzhen, but I always come back here. That's where I feel good.”
Prior to this project, most of Eric's board game designs served corporate clients for adult training and team building purposes. This APEC-themed game marks his very first work for the general public.

From conceptual spark to finished prototype, Eric spent six months refining the game, with ideas brewing even earlier. Countless brainstorming sessions, pages of notes and rounds of revisions went into the work. Starting from digital drafts on his computer, he hand-produced physical components. The smaller early prototype went through multiple iterations, with game boards, challenge cubes and project tokens all made by hand.

The design is ingeniously modelled on how APEC operates. Removable small cubes on the board stand for challenges and obstacles, while tokens represent projects proposed by APEC members. Players must overcome barriers first, then cooperate with one another to move project tokens into the“approval pool”, symbolising project endorsement. The sophisticated cooperative mechanism of APEC is simplified into easy-to-follow rules. Through gameplay, players gain an intuitive understanding of what APEC is and how multilateral cooperation works.

Why use a board game to interpret APEC? The inspiration stems from Eric's real-life experience in Shenzhen. To him, Shenzhen is a true melting pot. It draws dream-chasers from across China as well as foreign immigrants like him. People of diverse backgrounds converge here and work together to fuel the city's prosperity. This mirrors the core of APEC: participants from varied nations with distinct development goals set aside differences, collaborate hand-in-hand and pursue win-win outcomes.

Eric has devoted considerable time and energy into polishing this creation. Beyond his passion for board game design, it is Shenzhen's profound impact on his life that drives him. The city reshaped his career path. It is the place where he has lived the longest besides his hometown, where he started his family and built up his business. “If tomorrow I have to move, I will not be afraid,” said Eric. Shenzhen has taught him to stay flexible and adaptable, just like the city itself, which always embraces change and rises to challenges.

For Eric, this board game is far more than a design piece. It is a heartfelt gift for Shenzhen and for the 2026 APEC summit. Moving forward, he hopes to bring this board game into classrooms, enabling children and adults alike to learn about APEC and appreciate the charm of multilateral cooperation through fun gameplay.
