A Rare Disease Breakthrough Across Hemispheres: Science knows no borders

In 2024, a two-year-old Swedish girl was diagnosed with metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD), a rare disease, after
seeking treatment across multiple countries without success. By chance, her father came across cutting-edge research papers by Professor Lian Qizhou's team at Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology (SUAT), and made the resolute decision to travel halfway across the globe to Guangming, Shenzhen.
After just three months of gene therapy, the girl made a remarkable recovery and was discharged from hospital, marking a major breakthrough in the treatment of this rare disease. Behind this “miracle” lies modern science, rooted in Guangming and reaching out to the world.
This life-saving journey spanning thousands of miles has also revealed the strength of life sciences in Guangming to the world. Behind the story, one question lingers: what unique innovation ecosystem in Guangming do such groundbreaking scientific achievements take root in?
In Guangming Science City, we have found three answers.

From the outset, Guangming Science City has built openness and shared access into the development of its two major life science research infrastructures.
The world's largest synthetic biology research facility runs around the clock with 40 automated functional islands, supporting cloud-based remote customization and one-click experiment booking. China's first full-scale brain analysis and simulation research platform is equipped with more than 1,600 sets of precision instruments, covering the entire research chain from molecular cells to whole-brain functions.

Researchers and enterprises from China and around the world can book high-end instruments and facilities online from their phones. Access is open regardless of nationality or institutional affiliation. Whether overseas scholars or young scientists from China, all they need to bring is a scientific question worth answering.
In 2026, the Service Manual for Major Science and Technology Infrastructures of Guangming Science City was released, marking a new stage in the standardized and market-oriented provision of open and shared access to major research facilities.

Answer 2: Global talent gathering: Top Minds Meet, Ideas Multiply

The great science takes root where the world's top minds meet.
Top talents from all fields worldwide are gathering in Guangming — from scholars returning from Italy and Germany, to academicians and research teams at the forefront of basic medicine.

Diana Boraschi, a distinguished professor of immunology at SUAT and recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award, traveled all the way from Italy to join Guangming. "For me, science has no boundaries, and Guangming boasts very broad development prospects," she said. She also looks forward to advancing Asia-Pacific health research collaboration through the APEC platforms.

Professor Jin Zhi, a returnee faculty member at Sun Yat-sen University Shenzhen Campus, returned to China after completing her visiting scholarship at the Technical University of Munich in Germany. Today, she continues to connect with German research teams through international projects, building bridges for industry-university-research exchanges on artificial intelligence in Guangming.

Led by Academician Yan Ning, a research team based in Guangming published its latest breakthrough in glycobiology in the journal Science in April 2026, unveiling the carbohydrate “dark matter of life” at atomic resolution.

中山大学深圳校区海归教授金枝,在结束德国慕尼黑工业大学访学后毅然归国,如今她持续通过国际项目对接德国科研团队,在光明搭建起人工智能产学研交流桥梁。
以颜宁院士为核心的科研团队,2026年4月在《科学》杂志刊发其团队在糖质生物学领域的最新突破,以原子级分辨率揭开糖质“生命暗物质”面纱。

The great science takes root in collaboration-where strengths complement one another and researchers move forward together.
Global scientific challenges are rarely solvedby a single country or a single laboratory. With an open approach, Guangming is building international research collaboration platforms to pool complementary strengths and resources.

In Guangming Science City, China and Germany are bringing together more than a century of scientific expertise.
In April 2026, the Max Planck Society-Chinese Academy of Sciences Center for Synthetic Biochemistry was officially inaugurated, bringing together leading research strengths from both sides in synthetic biochemistry.

In Guangming Science City, six Asian countries are joining forces to tackle frontier scientific challenges.
Led by researcher Liu Chenli from the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT), more than 100 laboratories from China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand jointly released Asia's first 10-year technical roadmap for synthetic cells in Nature Biotechnology, supported by the synthetic biology facility of Guangming Science City.
From top research centers to collaborative research networks, Guangming continues to pioneer new models for international scientific cooperation, enabling global innovation forces to resonate here.
