THE Shenzhen Daily yesterday launched its U.S. and Indonesian editions, the first time it has been published overseas.

From yesterday, eight pages of the Shenzhen Daily will be published and distributed every day by the International Daily News, one of the largest-circulating Chinese-language newspapers outside China, in North America and Indonesia. The circulation reaches 60,000 copies in Indonesia and 20,000 in the United States.

The overseas editions cover current affairs, business and cultural events taking place in China, particularly in Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta, and also feature newsmakers and in-depth reports. They aim to inform overseas English readers of what is happening in Shenzhen and other parts of China in the political, social, cultural and economic spheres.

Huang Yanglue, president of Shenzhen Press Group, said the Shenzhen Daily’s overseas editions will be conducive to expanding its overseas influence.

Jeffrey Gu, editor-in-chief of the Shenzhen Daily, said: “Shenzhen Daily was the first local English-language newspaper to be circulated in Hong Kong since New China was founded. Now it has become the first local English-language newspaper to be published overseas. This shows the newspaper has long been devoted to expanding its influence aboard while also serving local readers.”

“The International Daily News is an ideal partner in our overseas expansion. Our overseas editions will also be a boon for our advertisers as the ad exposure will reach English readers in the United States and Indonesia,” he added.

Xiong Delong, chairman of the board of directors of the International Daily News, said the partnership with Shenzhen Daily will enhance the influence of his newspaper.

Xiong acquired the Chinese-language International Daily News, established in 1981 in the United States, in 1991 and launched its Indonesia edition in 2001. In cooperation with the People’s Daily and other newspapers, its Indonesian edition became the largest Chinese-language newspaper in the country within just two years.

The International Daily News Group now operates 12 newspapers and two magazines in North America, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, Australia, Europe and other parts of Asia.

In Indonesia, the Shenzhen Daily is distributed in Jakarta, Bandung, Medan and other major Indonesian cities, said Xiong Tianxi, Xiong Delong’s secretary.
