TWO Beijing-based correspondents with France 2 Television station made a special trip to Shenzhen yesterday to discover the secret of Tangy, a Shenzhen-based fashion brand.
The two French correspondents, Pascal Golomer and Sylvain Giaume, were accompanied by their Chinese interpreter Chang Jing. They arrived in the city yesterday following a visit to Tangy’s fabric factory in Shunde, Guangdong Province, on Tuesday.
During their Shenzhen visit, they interviewed the general manager of Liangzi, the company behind Tangy, about the material and how it is made into clothes.
The factory has been providing Liangchou, also known as “Guangdong silk gauze” in English, for Tangy clothes since 1995, one year after the Tangy brand was established in Shenzhen. The gauze has become the landmark material for Tangy’s clothes.
Gauze is a kind of traditional Chinese silk, which was invented about 500 years ago and was once very popular in China in the early 20th century. But as natural silk was replaced by artificial materials, the gauze market was greatly reduced, especially during the “Cultural Revolution” (1966-76) when it was considered a “luxury” for the rich.
