Shen Zhen
Deputry Director of the Department of International Exchange and Cooperation, Secretariat National Student Sports
Ministry of Education, People’s Republic of China
Mr. President,
Mr. Secretary General,
Distinguished Members of the Executive Committee,
Before I begin my presentation, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Shen Zhen, the same pronunciation as this city. When my father named me Shen Zhen 29 years ago, he could hardly imagine that today I would appear on this historic occasion to introduce to you another Shenzhen, a city younger than me.
I believe you already have a clear idea about what this city has achieved. This young city, China’s proud special economic zone, will welcome the Universiade with enthusiasm and offer the best facilities and services, creative marketing plan and excellent cultural events during the Universiade.
Now, I would like to say a few words about the sport venues in Shenzhen. We know well that complete facilities are the prerequisites for the success of the Universiade. The municipal government has earmarked 638.89 million US dollars for the overhauling and construction of sport venues. For the 13 sports of the Universiade, we are preparing 54 venues including 29 for competition and 25 for training. The construction of 22 venues is completed, 10 need to be renovated and the rest 22 will be built. These sport venues will be equipped with the world-class competition facilities and information transmission system. I may assure you that, after Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games, we will get assistance from them in terms of experience and equipment. We can guarantee that the facilities and equipments of all sport venues meet the requirements of FISU and international sports federations. As you have seen, it took us only 26 years to build a modern international metropolis. We are confident and capable of finishing all the work of the 32 sport venues on schedule before the 26th Universiade.
