There is one thing I wish to specially emphasize, that is, a huge number of volunteers. At present, there are about 530,000 volunteers. If the 26th Universiade is held in Shenzhen, we will set up a command center of volunteers. The Chinese and foreign student volunteers will work together to provide friendly and effective services.
Ladies and gentlemen, I expect you have a great interest in the higher education and sports of the candidate cities for the Universiade. Higher education in Shenzhen has been developing very rapidly. We have 11 institutions of higher learning and one university town. Within one-hour drive from Shenzhen, there are over 60 universities and three university parks with a total enrollment of 800,000. The number is expected to reach 1.3 million by 2010.
Nearly half Shenzhen’s population takes part in physical exercise, the young residents of the city have a keen interest in sports. A young teacher from Shenzhen university summited Mount Qomolungma, a young man cycled across Australia and Europe to support Shenzhen’s candidature. They have provided inspiring examples for all the young people in our city.
Residents of Shenzhen, from children to the elderly, have expressed their warm support to the city’s bid for the Universiade. They are doing everything possible to turn their dream into reality. The motto “Shenzhen embraces the world” is actually from an ordinary resident. People’s enthusiasm coupled with the efficient and strong support of the government will ensure the success of the Universiade.
What we wish to do is “a grand gathering of the young in a young city”, we have drawn up a plan to enable university students the world over to exchange their sporting experience. We shall turn the Universiade 2011 into a students’ festival featuring fair competition and friendship. You will see in Shenzhen the largest Universiade ever held in the history of university sports.
Shenzhen is ready to embrace the world. Sport makes people young and vigorous. In 2011, Shenzhen will show the world a miracle. In 2011 Shenzhen will impress every participant of the Universiade.
