    Mr. Xu Zongheng

    Mayor of Shenzhen

Executive Chairman of the 26th Universiade Bidding Committee of Shenzhen

Director of the 26th Universiade Executive Bidding Committee of Shenzhen

    Mr. President,

    Mr. Secretary-General,

Distinguished members of the Executive Committee,

    Good Morning!

This is my first time making a presentation in English. I have been practicing quite hard on the flight, on the bus and in my hotel room. By doing so I am taking the lead to participate in our program: “Shenzheners Speak Foreign Languages”. This program is dedicated to promote Shenzhen as the candidate city of the 2011 Summer Universiade.

Yes, Shenzhen! As Mayor of this city, I can responsibly say that Shenzhen can be your best choice.

    Why? There are three reasons.

First, Shenzhen is an international city. Being the first Special Economic Zone in China, Shenzhen has open to the outside world since 1980. Shenzhen has embraced the world for over 26 years!

Secondly, Shenzhen is a young city, whose residents’ average age is only 26. And today there are over 800 thousand university students living in Shenzhen and its adjacent areas, including Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and Macao.

Thirdly, Shenzhen is a dynamic city. Come to Shenzhen, you can see nearly 20 million of containers handled at its ports every year, find thousands of sport and culture facilities, and feel the sincere smile on over 8 million residents’ faces!

So, isn’t it a perfect place for the Universiade?

But if Shenzhen is given the honor, how can we ensure a successful Universiade in 2011?

We already have firm support from the public, the universities, and most importantly, from China’s central government. In addition, during the past years, we have had a wealth of experience in organizing large-scale sports events. The operation of the Universiade will be as smooth as velvet.

Last but not least, Shenzhen Government is now financially more than ready. We are determined to do our best, working closely with the FISU, to ensure a complete success.

In conclusion, I would like to share with you my new finding about the letters “FISU”, and that is: “Fact Indisputable: Shenzhen is the best candidate city for the 2011 Universiade”!

    Thank you very much!
