Not having idea as to what the borrowed money was being used for, people were still willing to loan him funds.
“Wei is on good terms with most of the doctors,” said one of his colleagues, who declined to be named.
Wei had also been punctual in paying interest on the fifth day of each month, before he suddenly disappeared May 8. Since then, his house has been vacant and his mobile phone switched off.
So far, 10 doctors have confirmed lending him more than 1.3 million yuan. The hospital has reported the case to the police and suggested the creditors sue Wei.
The paper said the 10 doctors made up only a small fraction of the number of people who lent him money. The brother of one doctor allegedly lent Wei 950,000 yuan.
Two people have already sued Wei, but many others plan to forget about the money completely.
“It’s not funny to be involved in such a scandal. Losing 200,000 yuan is not a very big deal to doctors, though it may be a heavy blow to those temporary employees,” said an employee of the hospital.
Rumor has it that the couple had a female accomplice who was collecting all the money. She has apparently left the country. People said they saw Wei receive a letter from the woman, which said “Don’t try to look for me, because I am already out of China.”
Wei’s wife, a teacher at Songgang Middle School, asked for sick leave last week. She had allegedly borrowed money from her colleagues too.(Li Dan)
