A MAN received a 5,000-yuan (US$649.35) cash reward from the municipal environmental protection bureau Monday, after reporting a factory which was illegally discharging sewage.
According to the environmental protection bureau, the factory in Longgang was discharging untreated industrial sewage heavily polluted by chemical contaminants.
A spokesman for the bureau, surnamed Duan, said the factory would be fined and its sewage discharge license would be revoked.
The bureau has promised to keep details of informants strictly confidential, to avoid retaliation from polluting companies.
The maximum reward amount for pollution informants was raised from 5,000 yuan to 100,000 yuan two weeks ago. Initially it was just 500 yuan.
