Chen decided to become a nun a month after she was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, according to the Nanjing-based Modern Express, quoting a doctor specializing in breast cancer. But earlier media reports said Chen made the decision as “she felt much better” after practicing Buddhism at a temple for two months. An employee of Chen’s advertising company surnamed Wu said Chen had been a practising Buddhist since 1999.
“Chen didn’t undergo any surgery after she was diagnosed with the illness because of her religious belief of an intact body. But it was too late when she finally went to the United States to seek medical treatment. She had been taking traditional Chinese medicine since then,” said Chen Jianyue, an actor playing “Xiang Lin” in the TV series.
Two weeks after Chen’s tonsure, Hao also undertook a ceremony in Shenzhen to become a monk.
