IT may sound like a cliché. Before leaving for a rehearsal in Guangzhou on Tuesday, U.S. pianist Nicholas Zumbro, who is in town to open the Nanshan International Music Festival, said the key to becoming a successful pianist is “practice, practice, practice.”
He has seen many people with talent. They win competitions at an early age, but it does not ensure success later on. “Life is a long process. People can meet setbacks. Musicians need to have the passion that keeps them going.”
“In fact, if pianists can make a living by playing, they can be called a moderate success. If they can play important concerts, publish hot-selling CDs, they can be called a big success.”
Zumbro said he had heard Li Yundi play the piano.
“He is talented, and played with polish. He said some nice things at an interview,” he recalled.
