TAIWAN leader Chen Shui-bian yesterday appointed the island's top mainland negotiator as the new head of Taiwan's "Executive Yuan."
Chang Chun-hsiung, 69, has served as head of the "Executive Yuan" before, from October 2000 to February 2002.
He is also the chairman of the Taiwan-based Strait Exchange Foundation (SEF), an organization that takes charge of exchanges with the mainland.
The appointment of Chang as head of Taiwan's "Executive Yuan" came after the shock resignation of Su Tseng-chang on Saturday -- the fifth head to quit in seven years. Su had served for less than 18 months.
"Since Chang has served as the SEF chairman since 2005, he will become the 'premier' who best knows the mainland," Chen told a press conference.
"A firm position and pragmatic ways are the fundamental principles of the government's handling of the cross-Straits relationship."
