A truck carrying 13 tons of potassium chlorate and food additive caught fire at 10am on Thursday on an overpass in Shaoyang city in central China's Hunan Province.
The fire caused a release of chlorine gas into the air, which polluted the environment and was harmful to local inhabitants. No casualties were reported.
The local fire brigade, environmental protection service and traffic management departments arrived at the incident that took firemen two hours to complete the rescue work.
According to local official release, spontaneous combustion caused the accident.
