Floods in Uruguay have killed two people and left more than 9,000 people homeless as rivers overflowed after unusually strong rains last week, the country's National Emergency System said Tuesday in a statement.
The floods were the nation's worst since 1959, which have hit nine of the country's 19 provinces.
According to the statement, 5,300 people have been evacuated across the central province of Durazno, where the River Yi is flowing three meters above its normal water level.
In eastern province of Treinta y Tres, there are 1,500 evacuees, and in western Mercedes, 3,200.
The capital of Treinta y Tres, 280 km northeast of Montevideo, is all but cut off, with flood waters covering the major highways there. Families have been rescued with boats and helicopters.
