The Shanghai Ocean Aquarium will exhibit some of the most dangerous creatures ever to turn a fin or flick a tentacle this Labor Day holiday. More than 20 breeds of fish will be on display, including the frogfish, dragon moray eel and porcupine fish.
"Some of them can swallow prey with an extremely fast speed, some can use poison or venom to protect themselves, and others can deliver serious bites or even produce electricity," said Sharna Yang, an official with the aquarium.
The exhibition will inform visitors that these deadly creatures also have their soft side and their venom is used only for catching prey or self-defense, Yang said. "People usually have stereotypes about these creatures, and may hurt them out of fear. But the creatures have the right to live and should receive respect from us."
Every year up to 50,000 people are hurt by ocean creatures and another 20,000 are poisoned by eating them.
The exhibition will continue to the end of the year. Tickets for the aquarium cost 110 yuan (US$14) each.
