Medical and Health Care
Shenzhen continued the development of its public health care system, improved the system of disease prevention and control, and set up the city's emergency commanding center. An effective system has been established to deal with emergency. The city put emphasis on providing citizens with safe food and strengthened management on food safety. The city improved medicare services and achieved good results in public health cause. By the end of 2004, Shenzhen had 865 medical and health care institutions, some 87 of them were hospitals (not including healthcare centers for women and children). All the medical institutions offer 15,069 beds, 1,481 more than the previous year. There are a total 22,900 medical technicians. The city treated 35.141 million patients in 2004. Of those, 491,000 people were hospitalized.
Public Health
Shenzhen has established a quick-reacting and effective first-aid service system incorporated land, marine and air forces, and a treatment system with hospitals, firefighting and police working together. The city was able to handle unexpected disasters, emergency rescue in case of public health mishaps and emergency services for large public events.
Local authorities have upgraded the municipal, district, sub-district and community centers of disease control, community health service centers, public health inspection stations, and municipal first-aid centers as well as district and large hospital first-aid institutions.
The city lead the country in establishing township's disease prevention and medical care institutions. There were 281 community health care service centers, covering 5.39 million residents. Food hygiene, environmental hygiene work and school health had been kept at high levels.
