Shenzhen's logistics industry, spearheaded by sea and air transportation, saw robust growth in 2004. Cargo handling capacity reached 135.3714 million tons, up 20.7 percent year on year, and container turnover surged 28.2 percent year on year to 13. 659 million TEUs.
The industry recorded 21.888 billion yuan in transportation, warehousing and telecommunications, accounting for 7.65 percent of GDP. With the EDI information center as the logistics information platform, the transportation industry, spearheaded by the shipping industry, has become an important part of modern logistics.
The city's ports handled 64.7858 million tons of goods in 2004, up 14 percent from the year before. Cargo traffic hit 24.378 billion tons kilometers, up 15.51 percent year on year. The ports handling capacity amounted to 112.1954 million tons, surging 27.98 percent year on year. Air cargo reached 406,600 tons, up 21.7 percent year on year. Mail services made 983 million yuan in earnings, up 26.03 percent and the city's container traffic was ranked fourth in the world.
Logistics Hub
Shenzhen has gradually been building itself into a globalized, multi-functional, highly efficient modern logistics hub. The city's logistics has focused on international logistics but is based on regional logistics.
The logistics transportation platform focusing on modern comprehensive transportation system and the logistics information platform focusing on posts, telecommunications and networks contribute to set up Shenzhen's operational platform for its rapid growth of logistics industry.
With highways as the backbone and sea port, air port, railway lines, bus lines, and road port as the trunk lines, Shenzhen’s logistics industry connect Pearl River Delta, eastern and western ports, airport and transportation within the city together. A combination of sea transportation and railway transportation is being developed to explore new methods and room for expanding Shenzhen’s logistics industry.
