Sales of wholesale, retail and catering industries in Shenzhen increased by 24.396 billion yuan in 2004, 10.5 percent higher than the year before.

The consumer market was stable and saw brisk growth. The retail sales of social consuming products totaled 91.545 billion yuan, 14.2 percent more than the year before. Of that, wholesales totaled 75.887 billion yuan, expanding 14.7 percent from the year before, and the catering industry took in 15.658 billion yuan, 16.9 percent more year on year. The commodity sales totaled 205.54 billion yuan, 15.3 percent higher than the year before.

The retail industry had more than 300,000 employees and the number of commodity networks exceeded 90,000. There was more than 5 million sqm of retail floor space. The number of supermarkets with floor space exceeding 10,000 sqm was more than 50 and Dongmen and Huaqiangbei emerged as the city's two main shopping centers covering an area of 1 million sqm respectively.

Large commercial projects like the MIXc shopping center at downtown area, Kingglory commercial plaza were completed. World famous retailers such as IKEA, Jusco, B&Q and Target have already set up their regional headquarters, procurement centers and supply centers in Shenzhen.
